Mesoscale Discussion 1677
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0217 AM CST Sat Dec 01 2018

Areas affected...Central NE into southern SD

Concerning...Heavy snow

Valid 010817Z - 011415Z

SUMMARY...Heavy snow, with rates potentially exceeding 1 inch/hour,
is expected to commence between 10-12Z.

DISCUSSION...At 08Z, a powerful deep-layer cyclone is moving
northeastward across the central Plains, with an expansive
precipitation shield arcing from the Arklatex/Ozarks vicinity
northwest into portions of KS/NE and southern SD. Surface
temperatures to the north of the cyclone have remained largely above
freezing and most of the precipitation has fallen as rain thus far.
However, gradual deep-layer cooling is expected through the morning
as the cyclone slows down and begins to occlude, with a changeover
to primarily snow expected within the MCD area between 10-12Z. As
this changeover occurs, strong ascent and continued deep-layer
moisture transport will support heavy wet snow rates at or above 1
inch per hour, which could persist for several hours through the
morning due to the slow movement of the cyclone.
