Mesoscale Discussion 2186
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0351 AM CST Tue Dec 03 2019

Areas affected...Southern New England

Concerning...Heavy snow

Valid 030951Z - 031215Z

SUMMARY...Moderate to heavy snow with rates of 1-2 in/hr may
continue for a couple more hours but should decrease in overall
intensity by 12-13Z.

DISCUSSION...Multiple bands of moderate to heavy snow have persisted
through the early morning hours with the most recent consolidation
of bands across northeast MA to eastern CT and RI. Snowfall rates
within this band are likely in the 1-2 in/hr range. Evening guidance
was too quick to indicate the demise of heavy snow. Recent HRRR runs
have gradually caught up, but it appears the 06Z NAM may have the
best relative handle on the longevity of heavy snow across southern
New England. With time, as the primary mid-level cyclone off the New
England coast shifts northeast, drying in the dendritic growth layer
should result in a reduction of snowfall rates within the cold
conveyor belt.
