MD 1898 CONCERNING WINTER MIXED PRECIPITATION FOR PORTIONS OF WEST TEXAS NORTHEASTWARD THROUGH MUCH OF WESTERN/CENTRAL OKLAHOMA

Concerning...Winter mixed precipitation

SUMMARY...Mixed winter precip continues across portions of
west-central Texas and will spread north/northwestward into
central/southwestern Oklahoma this afternoon.

DISCUSSION...Recent observations and radar mosaic imagery indicate a
broad area of mixed winter precipitation (rain, freezing rain, and
sleet) extending from near San Angelo to Wichita Falls/Vernon. 
Portions of the region nearer the Red River (near Wichita
Falls/Vernon) got above freezing before the onset of precipitation,
however, though dry low-levels and wet-bulb cooling as precipitation
spreads northward into that area will likely result in a change over
to freezing rain/sleet in the next couple hours or so.  Recent
models indicate that this regime should persist into this afternoon
as an upper low (not over south Texas) moves northward and continues
to provide lift/ascent.  Accumulations of 0.06 inch were noted in
the last hour near Abilene, Texas, and these accumulations are
possible at times across western North Texas as surface temperatures
cool.

Farther northeast, another band of precipitation was advancing
northwestward across the Duncan/Pauls Valley/Ada areas where
temperatures are currently near 32F.  The low-level airmass just
north of this band has remained cool/dry and near freezing, and the
advancement of precipitation atop this airmass will allow for
cooling surface temperatures and the onset of freezing rain and/or
sleet.  Accumulations of 0.06 in or more over the next 3 hours
appear probable.
